As the 2027 general elections draw closer, the political atmosphere in Nigeria is heating up once again. Citizens across the country are beginning to look inward, reflect on the challenges they’ve faced over the last few years, and consider who they truly want to lead them into a better future.
From the presidential seat in Aso Rock to the state government houses like Benue, the message from the streets is becoming clearer: The people are tired, and they want change.
One name that continues to gain momentum ahead of the 2027 polls is Peter Obi, the former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections. Many Nigerians believe that Obi may finally defeat the incumbent, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, if he contests again.
In the same vein, in Benue State, there is growing belief that Hon. Herman Iorwase Hembe, a seasoned lawmaker and respected son of the soil, may unseat the current governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, if the election were held today.
But why are these predictions gaining weight?
Cost of Living: A Nation in Distress.
Let’s be honest—life in Nigeria today is extremely difficult. The prices of everything—food, fuel, shelter, transportation, even water—have gone up drastically. A bag of rice now costs more than many people earn in a month. Petrol prices are at an all-time high, affecting transportation and the cost of goods. Many families are skipping meals, struggling to pay rent, and just trying to survive daily.
These challenges are not just statistics. They are the real-life experiences of millions of Nigerians. And for many, it feels like those in power are not doing enough to ease their pain.
This is why many are turning their attention to Peter Obi—a man seen as sincere, straightforward, and passionate about fixing the country. His message of cutting waste, investing in human capital, and building from the grassroots up still resonates with the people. With better strategy and stronger alliances, Obi may just have a solid chance of defeating Tinubu come 2027.
Benue in Crisis: Insecurity and Neglect
Back home in Benue, the story is heartbreaking. The state, once called the “Food Basket of the Nation,” is now a land filled with blood, tears, and fear. Killings have increased, and many communities have been turned into war zones due to persistent attacks by armed herdsmen and other criminals.
Today, over 300,000 Benue indigenes are displaced and living in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. These are innocent people—children, mothers, fathers—who were forced out of their ancestral homes and farmlands and now live in poor conditions with little hope of returning soon.
Armed robbery, kidnapping, and banditry have become regular stories across the state. While the governor continues to announce road projects and some renovations here and there, the painful truth is: Roads don’t matter if people are being killed on them.
Lives must come first.
Fr. Alia: Lost Connection With the People?
When Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia was elected in 2023, the people had great hopes. He was seen as a man of God who would lead with compassion, discipline, and fear of the Lord. But almost two years later, many believe he has lost touch with the very people who voted him in.
While some development can be seen in terms of road construction and some school renovations, the governor’s inability to tackle insecurity and support displaced citizens has created serious doubts in the minds of many Benue people.
The people are now asking hard questions:
What happened to the IDPs?
Why are mass burials still happening in Guma, Logo, and other parts of the state?
Why are kidnappers and robbers operating freely across the state?
Why Hon. Hembe Is Gaining Ground
In the middle of all this, Hon. Herman Iorwase Hembe is emerging as the face of hope for many Benue residents. Known for his courage, bold statements, and closeness to the grassroots, Hembe has continued to speak up for the ordinary people.
He is seen as young, energetic, experienced, and deeply concerned about the safety, empowerment, and development of his people.
With the way things are going in Benue, and the growing dissatisfaction with the current government, many believe Hembe may have a clear path to winning the 2027 governorship election—if he continues to engage with the people and present realistic solutions.
Final Thoughts: The Power Belongs to the People
Elections are not just about campaigns. They are about the lives of the people. Nigerians are beginning to understand that they hold the power, not the politicians. In 2027, many voters—especially the youth—will be more informed, more united, and more intentional about who they cast their votes for.
Whether at the national level with Peter Obi or in Benue with Hon. Hembe, the call is simple: We need leaders who feel our pain, not those who pretend all is well.
2027 is not just another election. It is a chance to change the direction of Nigeria and Benue State. A chance to put humanity before party loyalty, and truth before propaganda.
Let the people choose wisely.
