Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has reaffirmed his commitment to internal democracy within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring that he will fully support whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2026 general election.
Atiku, who is one of the frontline leaders in the coalition movement, made this known during a welcome ceremony held in Lagos on Saturday for new defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) into the ADC.
Speaking through his representative, Prof. Ola Olateju, Atiku stressed that the outcome of the ADC presidential primary would be respected, regardless of whether or not he secures the ticket himself.
“It is not a thing we can predetermine. Whoever emerges through free and fair contests, we are all going to support,” he assured, adding that the party’s structure is committed to ensuring a level playing field for all aspirants.
According to him, the ADC is not imposing any candidate on Nigerians, but rather allowing the democratic process to produce a flag bearer who will represent the interests of all citizens.
The event also witnessed the reception of prominent defectors into the party, a development overseen by ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, alongside Senator Kolawole Ogunwale and the Lagos State ADC Chairman, Mr. George Ashiru.
Atiku emphasized that the strength of the party lies in inclusivity and openness, noting that all aspirants are free to contest for the presidential ticket.
“The winner of the primary will not just be a candidate of ADC but a candidate of Nigerians,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the ADC presidential race is already generating buzz, with three leading figures—former governors, seasoned politicians, and past presidential contenders—Chibuike Amaechi, Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar himself—seen as the frontrunners for the party’s ticket.
