Nigeria’s first-ever Olympic gold medallist, Chioma Ajunwa, has finally received a long-promised house from the Lagos State government—25 years after her historic triumph at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Ajunwa, a former police officer and track-and-field athlete, etched her name into the country’s sporting history when she won gold in the women’s long jump event, becoming not just Nigeria’s first Olympic champion but also the first black African woman to win gold in a field event at the Olympics.

Following her record-setting performance, the Lagos State government in 1996 pledged to reward her with a house—a gesture that became symbolic of Nigeria’s support for its sporting heroes. However, that promise went unfulfilled for over two decades.

In a bittersweet turn of events, Ajunwa was finally handed the keys to a 3-bedroom apartment in Lagos—a move that both celebrates her legacy and raises renewed questions about how Nigeria treats its athletes after their peak.

Reacting to the gesture, Ajunwa expressed mixed emotions. “I’m grateful that this has finally happened, but it also reminds me of the long years of waiting, of being forgotten despite serving my country,” she said.

The delayed reward has sparked nationwide discussion on the urgent need for timely recognition and better welfare for Nigerian sports icons, many of whom face financial and emotional hardship after their competitive careers.

Ajunwa’s Olympic gold remains a landmark achievement in Nigeria’s sports history—one that continues to inspire generations of athletes.
