Lionel Messi is eyeing a sensational move away from Inter Miami before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as speculation grows over his desire to return to a more competitive footballing environment.

According to respected Argentine journalist Esteban Edul, Messi is considering his future carefully, with talks over a contract extension reportedly paused.

The World Cup winner’s current deal with Inter Miami, signed in 2023, is set to expire at the end of 2025.

While the contract includes an option for a one-year extension, that clause has not yet been activated, and insiders suggest that Messi is now weighing a possible return to European or other top-flight football in the lead-up to Argentina’s World Cup title defence.

The 36-year-old’s introspection reportedly intensified following Inter Miami’s recent 4-0 thrashing by French giants Paris Saint-Germain—his former club—raising renewed questions about the level of competition in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Despite the swirling speculation, Inter Miami remains confident about keeping their global superstar. Renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano quoted sources close to the club, stating:

“Leo is under contract until the end of 2025. The reality is that both parties are interested in continuing the relationship. The necessary steps are being taken with the right mindset to make it happen.”

Off the pitch, Messi appears settled. His family’s well-being could ultimately influence his decision.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague told BBC Sport that Messi’s family is thriving in Miami:

“After an unhappy two-year stay in Paris, on a personal level, the Messi family are in a good place in Miami.

If his family are happy, then so is Messi. His wife Antonella is a face of Tiffany in the U.S. and works with other major brands like Adidas. His three sons are playing in youth teams, and Messi is often seen at their games.”

With the 2026 World Cup approaching—set to be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada—Messi’s next move is being closely monitored.

Will the Argentine legend stay loyal to Inter Miami, or will he seek one final challenge at the top level? Only time will tell.
