President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the 10th National Assembly under his leadership remains transparent, accountable, and responsive to the yearnings of Nigerians.

Akpabio gave the assurance on Tuesday while addressing senators as plenary resumed after a 10-week annual recess. His welcome address, titled “Steady Hands for a Great Nation,” set the tone for renewed legislative vigor and responsibility.

“To the citizens of Nigeria, we hear you and understand your expectations,” Akpabio said. “You demand results, not excuses; substance, not noise. This Senate will continue to operate openly and welcome public scrutiny because accountability is the lifeblood of democracy.”

He emphasized that the legislature remains the foundation of any democratic society, warning that any attempt to weaken it would amount to undermining democracy itself.

The Senate President also expressed sympathy for Nigerians affected by floods and other disasters, including insecurity and economic hardship, assuring that the legislature stands in solidarity with all those enduring difficult times.

Akpabio urged his colleagues to return to their duties with renewed dedication, stressing that Nigerians expect decisive action, not complaints.

“Our people look to us for solutions, not lamentations,” he stated. “Terrorism and banditry continue to torment our communities, the cost of living remains burdensome, and power supply failures disrupt daily life and business. These challenges demand urgent and courageous action.”

He further called for stronger collaboration between the legislature and the executive to drive meaningful reforms that will stabilize the economy, attract investment, and foster growth.

“We must legislate boldly,” Akpabio declared. “Together with the Executive, we must reshape the nation’s story through purposeful governance and reform-driven policies.”
