Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, on Monday administered the oath of office to 17 newly appointed commissioners, charging them to serve with loyalty, discipline, and a strong connection to the grassroots.
The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Old Banquet Hall of Government House, Makurdi, was a significant step in consolidating Alia’s cabinet as his administration begins the second half of its first term.
Addressing the appointees, the governor said the new commissioners were carefully chosen from across the state to drive his administration’s development agenda.
“We are in the second half of our first term, and the journey ahead is even longer,” Alia stated. “Out of the many, you were chosen today because you understand governance, transparency, accountability, and discipline. To whom much is given, much is expected.”
He reminded them of their oath of office, emphasizing the need to safeguard confidentiality, uphold the Nigerian Constitution, and maintain close contact with their constituencies as true ambassadors of government policies and programs.
Alia reiterated his administration’s commitment to people-centered governance, stressing that his vision was not about patronage politics but tangible development.
“This administration is not about squatting and sharing money,” he declared. “It is about progress, growth, and putting something in the pockets of market women and in the lives of children who may not even know I am their governor.”
On the sidelines of the event, the governor dismissed speculations of plans to replace his deputy, Dr. Sam Ode, ahead of the 2027 elections, describing him as a dependable partner.
“There is no vacancy for any deputy governor,” Alia said firmly. “I have a very good deputy who understands governance, is people-oriented, and very cerebral. He is capable, tested, and has all it takes to perform his functions. I love working with him and enjoy a personal relationship with him.”
Responding on behalf of his colleagues, Hon. Dennis Iyaighgba pledged absolute loyalty and commitment to the governor’s vision. “We are not here to merely occupy positions but to provide value addition and ensure tangible results that improve the lives of our people,” he said.
The newly sworn-in commissioners are: Dr. Ortese Yanmar, Dr. Fredrick Ikyaan, Michael Oglegba, Tiza Isaac Imojime, Alumo Orpin, Ugwu Odoh, Kunde Aondowase, Kwaghgba Amande, Joseph Ter Jir, James Dwem, Dr. Ornguga Yangien, Theresa Odachi Ikwue, Dr. Benjamin Ashaver, Dr. Adamu Margaret Ijaguwa, Dr. Peter Oboh Egbodo, Dennis Iyaighgba, and Dr. Paul Ejeh Ogwuche.
