A political support group within the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised alarm over the alleged destruction of campaign billboards promoting President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid in Akure, Ondo State.
The Grassroots Movement for Tinubu (GMT) said the billboards, which were strategically installed on streetlights along the Airport Road–Oba-Ile corridor, were forcefully removed by yet-to-be-identified individuals.
In a statement on Monday, GMT’s Director of Media and Publicity, Oyewamide Ojo, described the act as “deliberate and malicious,” warning that it was a dangerous precedent for democratic engagement.
“GMT views this act of vandalism as an assault on democracy, a slap in the face of free speech, and a deliberate attempt to erase the truth of the progress Nigeria is currently experiencing under President Tinubu,” Ojo said.
The incident comes amid a simmering dispute between some independent Tinubu support groups and Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. GMT had recently opposed the governor’s directive that all support groups must operate under a single platform, “Ondo for Tinubu 2027.”
While the group has not directly accused any political figure of orchestrating the vandalism, it urged security agencies to investigate and bring those responsible to book.
This development adds a new dimension to the political tensions in Ondo, where preparations for both the state governorship election and the 2027 general polls are already generating heated political activity.
