The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in the Rivers State Local Government elections held on Saturday, securing 20 out of the 23 local government chairmanship seats.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which currently governs the state, managed to win only three councils, marking a significant setback for the ruling party.
In what came as a shock to many political observers, Governor Siminalayi Fubara lost his own Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area to the APC, further highlighting the party’s growing dominance in the state’s grassroots politics.
Announcing the results on Sunday afternoon at the commission’s headquarters along Aba Road, Port Harcourt, the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Dr. Michael Odey, declared the APC as the overwhelming winner of the exercise.
The elections, which were closely watched given the state’s history of tense political contests, witnessed massive turnout across various local government areas. Political analysts say the outcome may reshape the political landscape in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
RSIEC has promised to release the full breakdown of chairmanship and councillorship seats won by each political party in the coming days.
