The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University (TSU) branch, has reinstated its previously suspended indefinite strike following the Taraba State Government’s failure to implement agreements reached with the union on January 17, 2025.
The union’s decision was announced in a press statement signed by its chairman, Joshua Garba Mbave, and released to journalists on Wednesday in Jalingo.
According to the statement, the industrial action was reactivated due to what ASUU described as the government’s inability to take “concrete and verifiable steps” toward fulfilling the commitments made during negotiations.
The union explained that the strike had earlier been suspended in good faith to allow the state government enough time to address the issues agreed upon. However, it lamented that no significant progress had been achieved.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Taraba State University Branch, hereby informs the general public, students, parents, and all stakeholders that it has resumed its previously suspended total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action,” the statement said.
ASUU noted that during its congress held on February 18, 2026, members reviewed the situation and concluded that the continued neglect of unresolved matters left them with no option but to resume the strike. The union maintained that it had shown patience and explored dialogue before resorting to industrial action.
Key issues highlighted include the lack of a functional pension scheme for university staff, unpaid salary arrears owed to lecturers, and the non-payment of accumulated Earned Academic Allowances.
The union also accused authorities of failing to implement the newly negotiated 2025 ASUU–Federal Government agreement, which it described as essential for improving staff welfare and ensuring stability within the university system.
Mbave stated that these challenges have persisted for years, negatively impacting staff morale, productivity, and the overall operations of Taraba State University.
He emphasized that the decision to resume the strike was a last resort after repeated engagements with the Taraba State Government failed to yield results.
ASUU therefore called on relevant stakeholders to urgently intervene to resolve the crisis and prevent further disruption of academic activities within the institution and across the state.
