Former Vice President of Nigeria and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned his membership from the opposition party.
Atiku’s resignation comes as part of a strategic political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of PDP, Jada 1 Ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku formally ended his decades-long affiliation with the party.
The development was made public on Wednesday, July 16, via a post on X (formerly Twitter) by his Special Assistant on Media, who also shared a copy of the resignation letter.
In the letter, Atiku acknowledged his involvement in the formation of a new political platform named the Alliance Democratic Congress (ADC), which he described as a coalition of like-minded progressives committed to rebuilding Nigeria on the foundations of unity, equity, and reform.
Atiku’s exit from the PDP is expected to send ripples across the political landscape, especially as the party continues to struggle with internal divisions and dwindling public support. Political analysts believe his move signals the beginning of a new chapter in the build-up to the 2027 presidential race.
