Barcelona have made a decisive move in the transfer market by going all in to secure the signature of Colombian winger Luis Díaz, effectively ending their pursuit of Spanish international Nico Williams, ConfirmNews can confirm.
According to sources close to the Catalan club, the Blaugrana have shifted their full focus to Díaz, who is currently under contract with Liverpool FC.
The 28-year-old has emerged as the top target for new head coach Hansi Flick, who believes the Colombian’s explosive pace, flair, and direct style of play perfectly align with his tactical vision for the upcoming season.
“Luis Díaz is the kind of player that fits Barcelona’s new attacking blueprint — dynamic, experienced, and capable of breaking defensive lines,” a senior club source told ConfirmNews.
Barcelona had been monitoring Nico Williams, the Athletic Bilbao winger, for several months. At just 22 years old, Williams had been seen as a long-term investment with enormous potential.
However, the rising cost of his release clause — reportedly around €58 million — coupled with his wage demands and competition from Premier League clubs, has cooled Barça’s interest.
In contrast, Díaz’s situation at Liverpool is seen as more favorable. Although he remains a key player at Anfield, Liverpool are reportedly open to negotiations if the right offer comes, particularly as they rebuild under new management following Jürgen Klopp’s departure.
Negotiations between Barça and Liverpool are said to be at a preliminary stage, but Barcelona are confident they can strike a deal by offering a structured package that includes performance-based add-ons and possibly player exchanges.
Díaz, who joined Liverpool from FC Porto in January 2022, has impressed in the Premier League with his technical brilliance and work rate.
He scored 11 goals and provided 7 assists in all competitions last season, despite battling injuries and inconsistent form across a transitional campaign for the Reds.
While financial fair play constraints still loom over Barcelona, club president Joan Laporta has reportedly greenlit the move, seeing Díaz as a marquee signing who can help rejuvenate the club’s attacking identity.
With pre-season just weeks away, Barcelona are pushing to finalize key transfers early, and their pursuit of Luis Díaz could signal the start of a bold new era under Flick.
