In a significant win for civil rights, a Benue State court has ordered the release of peaceful protesters arrested over a demonstration against the recent killings in Yelewata.
The judge, in a landmark ruling, affirmed that the demonstrators were only exercising their constitutional right to peaceful protest, and proceeded to not only grant them bail but also strike out the case entirely for lacking legal merit.
The protesters were detained following a peaceful march calling for justice for victims of the Yelewata attacks, which left several residents dead and many displaced.
Their arrest drew widespread condemnation from human rights advocates and civil society groups.
Expressing gratitude, the freed protesters and their supporters extended unreserved appreciation to Lawyers Alert Nigeria for providing free legal representation throughout the case.
Special thanks were given to Barrister Victor Eboh, whose legal expertise and commitment were instrumental in securing their release.
The ruling has been described as a victory for democracy, justice, and the rule of law, and a strong reminder that citizens have the right to speak out against injustice without fear of persecution.
