Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has strongly condemned the brutal killing of two indigenes of Kano State by suspected youths in the Agan community, located in the outskirts of Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
The victims, who were reportedly transporting goods to the southeastern region of Nigeria, were attacked late on Monday night after making a stop to purchase a recharge card.
According to a security source, the tragic incident occurred around 11 p.m. when the truck drivers parked briefly in the area.
“They parked in the Agan community to get a recharge card when some youths attacked and killed them,” the source said.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Kula Tersoo, Governor Alia described the attack as “barbaric and unacceptable,” and ordered immediate action from security agencies.
“Following the governor’s directive, five suspects have already been apprehended by the police in Makurdi. The search continues for others possibly involved in the heinous act,” the statement noted.
Governor Alia expressed deep sorrow over the incident and reiterated that the people of Benue are known for their peaceful and hospitable nature.
“We cannot allow some criminal elements to tarnish our image. These criminals MUST be fished out and made to face the full wrath of the law,” Alia declared.
He also extended heartfelt condolences to the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the families of the deceased.
Governor Alia assured the government and people of Kano that justice would be served swiftly and transparently.
Authorities have since intensified security presence in the area to prevent reprisal attacks and maintain peace.
