The Federal Government has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service in Kano State, marking a major milestone in the drive to modernise urban transportation and boost economic activities in northern Nigeria.

The ambitious rail project is designed to overhaul Kano’s metropolitan transport system by easing traffic congestion, improving mobility, and providing a reliable mass transit option for millions of residents across the state capital and surrounding areas.

According to government, the metropolitan rail service will connect key commercial, residential, and industrial hubs within Kano, enhancing the movement of people and goods while reducing travel time and transport costs. The project is also expected to significantly cut carbon emissions by shifting commuters from road-based transport to a cleaner rail system.

Beyond transportation benefits, the rail project is projected to stimulate economic growth through job creation during construction and operation, attract new investments, and strengthen Kano’s position as a major commercial centre in the region.

The Federal Government noted that the initiative aligns with its broader infrastructure development agenda aimed at promoting sustainable urban development and improving the quality of life for Nigerians. Further details on project timelines, funding structure, and implementation phases are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
