Former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, is reportedly dead.

According to emerging reports, the former head of the Nigerian judiciary passed away on Sunday at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, where he had been receiving medical care. Details surrounding the circumstances of his death remain sketchy as of the time of filing this report.

Official confirmation from the family, the Supreme Court, or relevant government authorities is still being awaited.

Justice Tanko Muhammad, who hailed from Bauchi State, served as Nigeria’s Chief Justice from 2019 to 2022. He was first appointed in an acting capacity following the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen, before being confirmed as substantive CJN by the Senate.

During his tenure, he presided over several landmark cases and played a key role in Nigeria’s judicial system at a critical period marked by political and legal reforms. His time in office, however, was also marred by controversy, including his resignation in 2022 amid allegations of ill health and administrative challenges within the judiciary.

Tributes have begun to pour in from members of the legal community and public figures, describing him as a seasoned jurist who dedicated decades of service to the Nigerian judiciary.

This is a developing story. ConfirmNews will provide updates as more details and official statements become available.
