President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in Brasília on Monday to begin a state visit aimed at deepening Nigeria’s diplomatic and economic relations with Brazil.

Tinubu was welcomed at the Brasília Air Base by top Brazilian officials, including Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte and Ambassador Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete, Brazil’s envoy to Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, also joined in receiving the president, who arrived from Los Angeles, United States.

In a statement, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the visit as a major step in consolidating ties between the two nations.

He disclosed that an official welcome ceremony, complete with full military honours, would be held at the Planalto Palace.

Following the ceremony, Tinubu is expected to hold a private meeting with his Brazilian counterpart, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, before engaging in expanded bilateral talks alongside senior officials from both governments.

The leaders will later witness the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and address a joint press conference.

Members of Nigeria’s delegation, including ministers, heads of government agencies, and private sector leaders, are scheduled to take part in the bilateral sessions and business engagements.

The visit represents a continuation of high-level engagements that have gained momentum since Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023. These include his participation in the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in July 2025 and the G20 Summit in November 2024, both hosted by Brazil.

Nigeria and Brazil share a longstanding relationship dating back to the early 1960s. In recent years, their cooperation has expanded in critical areas such as agriculture, defence, and strategic investment.

Notably, the two nations have signed a defence cooperation pact and established a strategic dialogue mechanism to broaden their partnership.

Tinubu’s visit is expected to further advance landmark initiatives like the $1.1 billion Green Imperative Programme (GIP) designed to boost Nigeria’s agricultural productivity and food security, as well as the $2.5 billion JBS investment aimed at job creation and industrial growth.

Observers say the president’s trip underscores Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening South-South cooperation while opening new avenues for trade, investment, and technological exchange with Latin America’s largest economy.
