The Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) is set to complete the installation of a 39.7-kilowatt solar-powered system at its In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Centre within the next ten days.
Chief Medical Director (CMD) Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande disclosed this on Thursday, August 7, 2025, during a working visit to the IVF Centre at the Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital, BSUTH Annex.
He explained that the upgrade—which includes solar power and procurement of modern medical equipment—will significantly boost the centre’s efficiency, reliability, and range of services.
According to Dr. Hwande, the enhanced facility will soon offer surrogacy and long-term storage of sperm and embryos while continuing to provide affordable IVF services at ₦700,000, far below the national average.
Commending Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia for his visionary leadership, Dr. Hwande lauded the administration’s commitment to bridging healthcare infrastructural gaps and delivering projects once considered impossible.
Coordinator of the IVF Centre, Dr. Luper Uva, also appreciated the support from the CMD and state government, revealing that the facility has already recorded six successful IVF procedures since inception.
On the technical side, contractor Engineer Abdul Hassan Basma assured that all installations will be completed on schedule. He noted that remodeling of the Radiology Department was also underway to accommodate international-standard equipment.
Engineer Fabian Chiemezie Nduji of Bolt and Green Power System, the firm handling the solar project, explained that the system—powered by a 20 KVA/39.7KW solar array and a 96 KWH lithium battery—will keep the IVF Centre running continuously for up to 72 hours without interruption.
Dr. Hwande also inspected ongoing works at the Radiology Department and the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Ultra-Modern Cancer Centre, reaffirming BSUTH’s commitment to delivering world-class medical services.
