Right-wing youth activist and influencer Charlie Kirk, a staunch ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, was shot dead on Wednesday in an apparent assassination that has fueled fears of a new wave of political violence in an already divided America.

Trump confirmed the 31-year-old’s death on Truth Social, writing:

“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead… No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my sympathies go out to his beautiful wife, Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”

The shooting occurred around midday as Kirk was addressing a large crowd during a question-and-answer session at Utah Valley University. Video footage captured the moment a single shot rang out, sending the crowd into panic as Kirk collapsed on stage.

The university initially said a suspect was in custody, but later reports indicated that was not the case, deepening uncertainty surrounding the attack.

Eyewitness Accounts of Chaos

Former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, who was present, told Fox News that Kirk was answering a question about mass shooters when the gunman struck.

“As soon as that shot went out, he fell back. Everybody hit the deck… people were screaming and running.”

Audience member Sophie Anderson, 45, told the Daily Mail she saw Kirk struck in the neck:

“He was just a fountain of blood. It was horrific.”

A Polarizing but Influential Figure

Kirk was the co-founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative youth movement he launched in 2012, which became a powerhouse in Republican politics. With millions of followers on Instagram and YouTube, he championed anti-immigration policies, outspoken Christianity, and conservative student activism.

Admired on the right as a fearless voice against liberal dominance on campuses, Kirk was equally reviled by opponents, who accused him of fueling polarization. His grassroots influence was credited with bolstering Trump’s support among younger voters — a factor in Republicans’ return to power.

Reactions Across the Political Divide

Tributes poured in from both allies and rivals.

Vice President JD Vance posted on social media:

“Dear God, protect Charlie in his darkest hour.”

Conservative commentator Tomi Lahren called him a “visionary” who had “opened the door for so many young conservatives to have a voice.”

On the left, figures like California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the act as “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible,” while Kamala Harris insisted, “Political violence has no place in America.”

Former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, herself a survivor of an assassination attempt, warned:

“Democratic societies will always have political disagreements, but we must never allow America to become a country that confronts those disagreements with violence.”

The assassination of Charlie Kirk marks a grim escalation in America’s charged political atmosphere, raising alarms about the future of free speech, political engagement, and national security.
