Officer Krystal Rivera, a 36-year-old Chicago Police Department (CPD) veteran, was unintentionally shot and killed by a fellow officer during a chase in Chatham on June 5, 2025.
The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue when tactical officers pursued an armed suspect into an apartment building.
A second individual pointed a rifle at the officers, and during the confrontation, a fellow officer’s shot struck Rivera in the back.
She was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center but died after the squad car transporting her caught fire, requiring a transfer. Another officer was injured, and two suspects were detained.
Rivera, a mother to a 10-year-old daughter, was remembered as a dedicated and compassionate officer.
The CPD and community mourn her loss, the second officer death in the 6th District since November 2024.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating, reviewing body camera footage and protocols. Three firearms were recovered, and the investigation continues.
