Makurdi, Benue State — The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, on Monday flagged off the maiden edition of the CMD’s Sports Competition with an electrifying football encounter between Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, and Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University of Agriculture, Makurdi.

The opening match, hosted at the First Camp, Moses Orshio Adasu University, marked the beginning of a week-long sporting fiesta aimed at promoting youth empowerment, academic excellence, and community harmony. The initiative also forms part of Dr. Hwande’s double celebration — his 50th birthday and two years of transformative leadership at BSUTH.

Event coordinator, Mr. Bito Michael Aondoyima, highlighted the competition’s unique vision, stressing that Dr. Hwande’s commitment extends beyond health care delivery to nurturing the potential of young people through sports and education. “This is more than a tournament. It is about building unity, inspiring students, and combining academics with extracurricular brilliance,” he said.

A major highlight of the event was the announcement of scholarships worth ₦100,000 each for 20 students drawn from the participating universities. The scholarships are designed to support their academic journey while motivating them to excel in sports and leadership.

The tension-soaked match ended with Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University of Agriculture defeating their opponents 1–0. The winners smiled home with ₦500,000 and a set of jerseys, while the runner-up team also received ₦200,000 and jerseys in recognition of their spirited performance.

Speaking after the match, the Acting Head of Public Relations and Protocol at BSUTH, Mr. Tsenzughul Moses, praised Dr. Hwande for what he described as “a unique and impactful style of celebration.” He hailed the CMD as a philanthropist, visionary leader, and a strong advocate for the downtrodden.

The grand finale of the competition is scheduled for September 29, 2025, at the BSUTH cafeteria, where prizes and scholarships will officially be presented. The successful kickoff underscores Dr. Hwande’s enduring dedication to sports development, youth empowerment, and the welfare of the Benue community.
