Publisher of Ovation International Magazine, Chief Dele Momodu, has said that the opposition’s best chance to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election lies in zoning the presidency to the Muslim North and the vice presidency to the Christian South.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Friday, monitored by DAILY POST, Momodu explained that President Tinubu has already secured strong political dominance across the South, making it nearly impossible for any southern candidate—regardless of popularity—to pose a serious challenge.
According to him, the 2027 contest is gradually shaping into a regional struggle rather than a purely political one. “It’s clear that this administration has turned the coming election into a North versus South affair,” he said. “That’s why both PDP and APC leaders keep insisting on a southern candidate—they understand Tinubu has already locked down the South. Neither Peter Obi nor Goodluck Jonathan can match his influence there.”
Momodu further noted that President Tinubu’s vast financial power and control of state structures place him at a significant advantage, emphasizing that only a well-coordinated northern opposition could alter the equation.
He, however, dismissed suggestions that his proposal undermines the principle of fairness or power rotation, pointing out that the idea of an eight-year rotational presidency between North and South has no constitutional basis.
“The Constitution doesn’t prescribe power rotation; it’s a gentleman’s agreement. Politics is about strategy, and if the opposition truly wants to win, they must think strategically,” he added.
