Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has expressed deep regret over his past support for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a grave mistake and likening it to “aligning with the devil.”

Melaye made the comments on Friday during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme. The outspoken politician, who recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), did not mince words in condemning the APC government for plunging Nigeria into what he described as worsening socio-economic hardship.

“Once I was blind, now I can see. I regret in totality,” Melaye declared. “Anyone who has moved with the devil, anyone who has aligned with an unholy tendency, should regret it.”

The former lawmaker lamented the scale of hunger and poverty ravaging the country, stressing that the suffering under the current administration had reached tragic proportions.

“You don’t need a prophet to tell you what is happening in this country. It is visible even to the blind and audible to the deaf,” he said. “The hunger in the land is shattered. People are dying of malnutrition in rural communities.”

He described how dire the situation has become, recounting how a mere announcement of rice distribution in a village could lead to deadly chaos. “If you are not careful, there will be dead casualties from the struggle to get something,” he warned.

Turning his attention to the 2027 general elections, Melaye voiced confidence in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a rising force capable of defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the polls. He emphasized the need to first stabilize the party before focusing on endorsing any presidential candidate.

“Especially those of us in the ADC, we need to create a comfortable, stable platform. I believe that platform will produce a candidate that will unseat President Ahmed Bola Tinubu in 2027,” he asserted.

When asked about supporting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Melaye declined to make any commitments but commended Atiku’s ongoing political efforts.

“I will not be talking about a presidential candidate or preference for anybody until we get the party completely stabilised and organise a transparently honest convention,” he explained.

“What Atiku is doing is rescuing this country, bringing together men of honour and valour to correct and palliate the satanic manifestation of the APC,” Melaye added.

The remarks underscore a growing realignment within the Nigerian opposition space, as political figures begin positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.
