Some newly recruited primary school teachers in Benue State have voiced discontent over what they consider unfair deployment to far-flung areas, describing the posting policy of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) as “punishment in disguise.”

One of the affected teachers, Dr. Isaac Mbanongun Kwanum, speaking from Uikpam in Guma Local Government Area, commended the recruitment exercise for its transparency but criticized the subsequent posting arrangement. He noted that while the process of selection was fair, the decision to deploy teachers to distant communities was discouraging.

Citing specific cases, Dr. Kwanum pointed out that indigenes of Mbabai were posted to Kaambe, while women from Daudu were directed to relocate to Kaambe to assume duty. He questioned the rationale behind such placements, arguing that they place unnecessary burdens on recruits who had accepted the teaching job in good faith.

“This is highly illogical. Is it a crime to take up this job?” he queried, stressing that such a policy could reduce the attractiveness of the profession and discourage those genuinely willing to serve.

While acknowledging the leadership of the SUBEB Chairman, Dr. Kwanum appealed for a review of the posting strategy to reflect fairness and consideration for the welfare of teachers. He urged authorities to put themselves in the shoes of the affected recruits, warning that the current policy could undermine morale and commitment in the teaching workforce.
