The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has launched a sweeping crackdown to cleanse Abuja and its satellite towns of street beggars, scavengers, illegal traders, and other public nuisances, under a new initiative tagged Operation Sweep Abuja.

The exercise was announced on Wednesday in a statement by Mr. Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

According to the statement, the operation follows a directive by Minister Wike aimed at restoring order and security to Nigeria’s capital. Olayinka emphasized that the operation would also target the notorious “one chance” criminals—robbers who pose as transport operators to lure and attack unsuspecting passengers.

“This exercise is being carried out in accordance with the Abuja Environmental Protection Act and other existing laws.

Abuja must reflect the pride and dignity of our nation—not be overrun by beggars and scavengers, many of whom have been linked to criminal activity,” Olayinka stated.

He disclosed that arrested individuals would be profiled and repatriated to their respective state governments.

“The safety of lives and property within the FCT remains the top priority of the administration. We urge all residents to remain vigilant and contribute to efforts in creating a safer, cleaner city,” he added.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities to the following emergency lines: 08061581938 and 08032003913.
