The Federal Government has responded to the recent suspension of Badeggi FM, a privately-owned radio station in Minna, Niger State, emphasizing that only the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has the legal authority to revoke or suspend broadcasting licences in Nigeria.
In a statement issued Saturday by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, the Ministry said it had taken note of widespread concerns raised by stakeholders in the media and broadcasting sectors over the development.
The station’s suspension was reportedly ordered by the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, during an expanded APC Caucus Meeting held in Minna on August 1.
The governor, in the presence of the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, alleged that the radio station had engaged in unethical broadcasting and incitement against the state government.
However, the Ministry clarified that decisions to suspend or revoke broadcasting rights are exclusively within the mandate of the NBC, as established by law.
“While acknowledging the concerns raised, the Ministry notes that the suspension of broadcasting licenses falls within the purview of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, as stipulated by law,” the statement read.
The Ministry further commended the Niger State Government for eventually deciding to formally channel its grievances through the appropriate regulatory body.
“In light of this, the Ministry welcomes the decision of the Niger State Government to formally report the perceived ‘unethical behavior’ of Badeggi FM to the NBC for resolution,” the statement added.
Minister Mohammed Idris also urged all parties to remain calm and allow the NBC to carry out its regulatory duties. He assured that the commission has the mechanisms in place to resolve the matter fairly and impartially, in line with professional broadcasting standards.
The case has sparked debate on government interference in press freedom, with media observers calling for due process and respect for constitutional provisions on free speech and responsible journalism.
