World football governing body FIFA has approved four new rule changes that will be implemented in matches ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will feature an expanded format of 48 teams, an increase from the traditional 32-team competition.

According to FIFA, the new adjustments are designed to speed up play and improve decision-making during matches.

The four approved rule changes include:

Substitutions: Players being substituted must leave the pitch within 10 seconds. Failure to do so will result in the incoming player being delayed for one minute before entering the field.

Throw-ins: Players will now have five seconds to take a throw-in. If the time limit is exceeded, possession will be awarded to the opposing team.

Medical Treatment: Any player who receives treatment on the pitch will be required to remain off the field for at least one minute before returning to play.

VAR Decisions: The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will now be able to review second yellow-card incidents and corner-kick decisions if there is a clear and obvious error.

The changes are expected to streamline matches and enhance officiating as preparations continue for the 2026 World Cup.
