The Benue State House of Assembly has prolonged the suspension of its former Speaker, Hyacinth Dajoh, adding another six months to the sanction.

The decision was reached during Tuesday’s plenary after a motion was presented by Terna Shimawua (APC/Kyan). The motion, titled “Motion to Review the Suspension of Hyacinth Dajoh (Gboko West State Constituency) from Legislative Duties,” sought an extension of the disciplinary measure.

Dajoh was first suspended on August 26 for three months over allegations that he attempted to spearhead an impeachment move against Governor Hyacinth Alia.

Shimawua told the House that Dajoh had failed to show any sign of regret or offer an apology since the suspension was imposed. He further alleged that instead of retracing his steps, the former Speaker had reportedly joined forces with the former Majority Leader, Saater Tiseer, and former Minority Leader, Michael Audu, in a fresh attempt to unseat the current Speaker, Alfred Emberga.

According to him, such conduct was disappointing, especially coming from someone who once occupied the Assembly’s top leadership seat.

The motion was unanimously adopted after being seconded by Simon Gabo (APC/Mata).

In his comments, Speaker Emberga reiterated the importance of preserving the honour and authority of the Assembly, noting that no individual is above the institution.

He added that once the extended suspension ends, Dajoh would be required to write to his office, show genuine remorse, and tender a formal apology before being allowed to return to legislative activities.

The extended suspension takes effect from November 25.
