Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has officially dissolved his cabinet, relieving all commissioners and political appointees of their duties in compliance with a Supreme Court judgment that voided their appointments.
Speaking at Government House, Port Harcourt, during a valedictory session with his outgoing cabinet on Wednesday to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, Governor Fubara expressed gratitude to his team for their service to the state over the last two years.
The governor’s decision follows the February 2025 Supreme Court verdict, which upheld the Rivers State House of Assembly faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as the authentic legislative arm. Many of Fubara’s commissioners had been screened and confirmed under the rival speaker, Victor Oko-Jumbo, a move that was strongly opposed by the Assembly led by Martins Amaewhule.
The political rift escalated earlier this year, culminating in the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, during which both the governor and the lawmakers were suspended for six months. Following reconciliation talks, it was agreed that a fresh cabinet would be reconstituted.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Nelson Chukwudi, Governor Fubara thanked the dissolved cabinet members for their contributions and reaffirmed his commitment to serve Rivers people with “renewed vigor.” He also urged citizens to remain steadfast in working with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to build a secure and prosperous Nigeria.
Meanwhile, at its first sitting after the expiration of emergency rule, the Rivers State House of Assembly directed the governor to forward a new list of commissioner nominees for screening and confirmation.
