The Benue State Government has reported an alarming rise in Lassa fever infections, confirming that 243 suspected cases have been recorded between January and September 2025, with 13 deaths linked to the outbreak.
State Epidemiologist, Dr. Asema Msuega, who disclosed the figures, said 18 of the cases were confirmed through laboratory testing. He explained that out of the 13 fatalities, five were confirmed cases, while eight others were classified as probable cases, as the victims died before samples could be collected. Among the dead was a health worker.
To curb further spread, Dr. Msuega revealed that the state Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), rolled out a community intervention project in August 2025 across identified Lassa fever hotspots.
According to him, the initiative prioritises rodent control, improved environmental sanitation, and community clean-up campaigns. It also incorporates sensitisation programmes to educate residents on prevention, as well as training health workers on case detection, management, and referral protocols.
He stressed that continued public cooperation with health officials is crucial in breaking the chain of transmission and reducing fatalities in the state.
