The House of Representatives is set to deliberate on a proposal seeking the creation of a new local government area—Kurya Madaro—in Zamfara State.
The proposed LGA would be carved out of the existing Kaura Namoda Local Government Area.
The motion, which is scheduled for presentation on the floor of the Green Chamber this week, aims to bring governance closer to the people of Kurya Madaro, a region described by stakeholders as rapidly growing in both population and economic activity.
Supporters of the proposal argue that the creation of Kurya Madaro LGA will enhance administrative efficiency, improve access to government services, and foster grassroots development in the area.
They also cite the region’s historical and socio-cultural distinctiveness as a justification for granting it administrative autonomy.
Lawmakers from Zamfara State have reportedly rallied behind the motion, with several representatives emphasizing the need to decentralize governance structures to address security challenges and promote inclusive development in the North-Western state.
If approved by the House, the proposal would undergo further legislative processes, including a constitutional amendment and concurrence by the Senate, before being transmitted to the Presidency for assent.
The creation of new local government areas has long been a contentious issue in Nigeria, often requiring broad consensus and adherence to constitutional guidelines.
However, the Kurya Madaro proposal is gaining traction amid calls for more localized governance and improved service delivery in underserved communities across the country.
