The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, has strongly condemned the deadly attack by suspected armed herdsmen on residents of Akpete and Asaba communities in Ojantele Ward of Apa Local Government Area.
In a statement, the governor expressed deep sorrow over the incident, which occurred when a group of farmers from Ojantelle, Asaba, and Akpete went to their cashew farms to harvest seeds. The attackers reportedly ambushed the farmers, killing several people, leaving six others missing, and abducting a young girl.
Alia described the assault as a senseless act of terror and a troubling reflection of the security challenges faced by rural farming communities across the state.
He questioned the motive behind the attack, noting that the victims were simply engaged in their legitimate farming activities. “My people are hardworking farmers and do not deserve such a cruel fate,” the governor said.
“I condemn this heinous act in the strongest possible terms. The killing of innocent citizens going about their daily farm work is an assault on our shared humanity and will not be tolerated,” he added.
The governor sympathized with the people of Apa Local Government, the affected communities, and the families of the victims, assuring them that the state government stands firmly with them during the difficult period.
He revealed that he has directed security agencies to intensify operations in the area to track down the attackers, rescue the abducted girl, and locate the missing persons. He also assured residents that every effort would be made to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Alia reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Benue State, emphasizing that no community would be abandoned to violence.
He urged residents not to lose hope, stating that the government is working closely with security agencies and community leaders to strengthen protection in vulnerable areas.
The governor also prayed for the souls of the victims and asked God to grant their families the strength to bear the painful loss, pledging that his administration would continue efforts until citizens can return to their farms without fear.
