In the early hours of today, Tuesday, June 18, 2025, heavy flooding rendered the Makurdi-Lafia-Abuja highway impassable, leaving commuters stranded and vehicles at the mercy of powerful floodwaters.

Eyewitnesses report that the flood has completely taken over large portions of the road, with fast-moving water strong enough to displace even heavy-duty vehicles.

Travelers already en route were forced to halt their journeys, while those planning to travel have been strongly advised to postpone or cancel their trips.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement, but locals warn that the current level of flooding is dangerously high and may persist due to ongoing rainfall across Benue and Nasarawa States.

Motorists and commercial transporters are urged to stay updated on road and weather conditions and avoid taking risks that could endanger lives and property.

This incident highlights the growing impact of climate change on Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure and the urgent need for improved drainage and early warning systems in flood-prone regions.
