If I speak now, they’ll say I don’t have sense. But I will speak — because silence in the face of mass murder is complicity.
Let me say it clearly: the government doesn’t care about us — whether at the state or federal level. The kind of killings happening in Benue State are beyond heartbreaking; they are devastating, dehumanizing, and deeply unjust.
Countless lives have been lost. Properties destroyed. Families torn apart. Communities left in fear. And yet — the nation carries on as if these deaths mean nothing.
Is this not enough reason to declare a national day of mourning? And if that’s too much to ask, can we not even observe a state-wide mourning to honor the dead and acknowledge the pain of the living?
The message we’re receiving from our leaders is clear: ordinary Nigerians don’t matter. If it were politicians dying in such numbers, there would be emergency sittings, flags flying at half-mast, and wall-to-wall coverage on national television.
But because it is the poor, the voiceless, and the forgotten — their blood is washed away with silence.
I speak today not just as a journalist, but as a son of the soil — as someone who loves Benue and grieves for its people. At ConfirmNews, we will continue to report the truth, amplify the cries of the oppressed, and hold the powerful accountable.
Benue deserves better. Nigeria deserves better. And until justice comes, we will not be silent.
