The Iranian government on Wednesday carried out the execution of a man convicted of spying for Israel, in connection with the assassination of a nuclear scientist during the recent 12-day war between both countries.
Identified as Roozbeh Vadi, the convicted spy was hanged following the confirmation of his sentence by Iran’s Supreme Court, according to a report by Mizan Online, the official news outlet of the country’s judiciary.
The report stated that Vadi had been recruited online by Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, and subsequently passed along classified information about one of Iran’s nuclear scientists, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike during the conflict.
While the exact timeline of Vadi’s arrest and trial remains undisclosed, Iranian authorities said his actions directly contributed to the assassination of the scientist during Israel’s aerial bombardment in mid-June.
The war, which was sparked by Israel’s large-scale strikes on Iranian military and nuclear infrastructure, claimed the lives of several high-ranking military officials, at least a dozen nuclear scientists, and hundreds of civilians, with both military facilities and residential areas targeted.
In the aftermath, Iran pledged swift justice for those accused of collaborating with Israel. Several individuals have since been arrested, tried, and executed over alleged links to Mossad.
Iran, which according to Amnesty International is the world’s second-highest executor after China, has intensified its crackdowns on espionage in recent years, especially amid heightened tensions with Israel.
