The Kogi State Police Command has arrested one Jato Alhaji Jaye for allegedly killing his 11-year-old son, Buhari Jato, in the Agbaja area of Oworo land, Lokoja Local Government Area.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed that the incident came to light on August 19, 2025, after one Zuberu Adamu of Fulani bush camp, Agbaja village, reported the matter to the police.
Adamu explained that his sister, Adama Adamu, had raised alarm over the disappearance of her son, Buhari, who had gone grazing with his father on August 17 but never returned.
A search party was immediately organized, which led to the tragic discovery of the boy’s decomposing body in the bush. The suspect, Jaye, was reportedly caught at the scene while attempting to bury his son in an effort to conceal the crime.
Police officers from Division ‘B’, Lokoja, swiftly arrived at the scene, documented evidence, and arrested the suspect. The remains of the boy were later released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
During interrogation, Jaye allegedly confessed to killing his son. He claimed that the boy had “offended him” while they were grazing livestock, and in anger, he flogged him with a Fulani stick, which resulted in the child’s death.
The police said the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lokoja, for further investigation.
