Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s inability to rescue Nigeria from what he termed “the prevailing political cankerworms” ravaging the nation’s governance and institutions.
In a resignation letter dated July 30 and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 1 in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Melaye said his decision was driven by what he described as the party’s lack of potency and capacity to deliver meaningful change to Nigerians.
“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” Melaye wrote.
A former senator and close ally of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Melaye is now a key member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the political platform recently adopted by the emerging opposition coalition.
Melaye’s resignation follows a wave of high-profile defections from the PDP in recent weeks. Former Senate President David Mark, former presidential candidate Dele Momodu, and Atiku Abubakar have also exited the party amid internal discontent and strategic realignments.
David Mark currently serves as the interim national chairman of the ADC, and has issued a stern warning to new members of the coalition, urging absolute commitment to the ADC project. He cautioned that there would be no tolerance for anti-party activities within the movement.
With Melaye’s defection, the opposition coalition continues to attract notable political figures, potentially reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
