The Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI) has extended warm congratulations to former Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR, mni, as he clocks 84 years today, August 17, 2025.
In a statement signed by Ambassador Emmanuel O. Okafor, mni, President of AANI, and Engr. Ifeanyi Jude Ngama, mni, National Publicity Secretary, the association described General Babangida as a visionary leader, pioneering strategist, and a towering figure in Nigeria’s political and developmental history.
General Babangida, a distinguished alumnus of Senior Executive Course 1 (1979) at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, was lauded for his landmark research essay titled “Civil/Military Relations: The Nigerian Case.”
According to AANI, the paper remains a reference point in Nigeria’s pursuit of civil-military harmony and strategic governance.
Babangida, who led Nigeria as Head of State from 1985 to 1993, was credited with initiating far-reaching reforms including the Structural Adjustment Programme, the creation of additional states, relocation of the Federal Capital to Abuja, liberalisation of the broadcast media, and championing peacekeeping initiatives across West Africa.
“AANI celebrates General Babangida not only for his birthday but also for a life of immense national significance. His foresight, intellect, and contributions to public policy continue to inspire generations of mni and stakeholders in the Nigerian project,” the statement read.
The association prayed for the elder statesman’s continued good health, peace of mind, and enduring legacy in the service of Nigeria.
“Happy 84th Birthday, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR, mni. Your AANI family salutes you today and always,” it added.
