Prominent activist and co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, Aisha Yesufu, has pledged her support for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, vowing to physically accompany the lawmaker to the National Assembly on Tuesday (today) as she resumes legislative duties.
Senator Natasha, who represents Kogi Central, has been under suspension since March 2025, but recently declared her intention to return to plenary following a Federal High Court ruling that declared her suspension unconstitutional and null and void.
Despite the court’s judgment, the Senate leadership has maintained its stance, stating there will be “no going back” on her suspension — a position that has drawn widespread condemnation from civil society groups and legal experts.
In a statement posted via her verified social media handles on Monday night, Yesufu described the Senate’s defiance of the judiciary as “a direct assault on democracy” and called on Nigerians to stand against what she termed “executive lawlessness within the legislature.”
“I will be with Senator Natasha at the National Assembly on Tuesday. The courts have spoken. The Senate must obey. Enough of this impunity,” Yesufu wrote.
Her solidarity comes amid growing pressure on the Senate to reverse its position and respect the court ruling. Many see Senator Natasha’s battle not just as a personal struggle, but as a test case for the rule of law and women’s representation in Nigerian politics.
Security is expected to be heightened at the National Assembly complex today as supporters, civil society actors, and media converge to witness what could be a dramatic showdown between the embattled senator and the Senate leadership.
