The Nigerian government has officially announced the burial arrangements for the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away recently in London.
As part of efforts to honor the former leader with a befitting state burial, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has constituted an Inter-Ministerial Committee to oversee all necessary protocols and logistics.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed that the committee will work in close collaboration with the Katsina State government and the Buhari family.
The committee will be chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.
Other prominent members include the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning; Minister of Defence; Minister of Information; and several others including the National Security Adviser and the Chief of Defence Staff.
Also appointed to the committee are key aides to the president such as the Senior Special Assistant on Political Matters, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS).
The Office of the Permanent Secretary, General Services, will serve as the secretariat to the committee.
In addition, the Federal Executive Council has directed 25 of its members to proceed to Katsina State to participate in the full schedule of burial rites.
They will also remain in Daura for the third-day prayer scheduled for Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
“As we prepare to bid farewell to one of Nigeria’s foremost statesmen, the Federal Government urges all Nigerians to join in prayers and reflection for the repose of the soul of our former leader,” Minister Idris said.
The burial is expected to follow Islamic rites and will take place in the late president’s hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
