According to report by Sahara Reporters on Thursday, 3rd July, 2025, a high-level National Constitutional Summit convened by a coalition of elder statesmen and civil society leaders is set to hold from July 15 to 17, 2025, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

The summit, organised by The Patriots in collaboration with the Nigerian Political Summit Group (NPSG), seeks to tackle Nigeria’s deepening constitutional and security challenges through a robust national dialogue.

The convener of the summit is Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Commonwealth Secretary-General, who is spearheading the effort alongside other notable national figures. According to a statement released Thursday by the spokesperson of the Summit Joint Secretariat, Prof. Anthony Kila, the event will gather key stakeholders including former presidents, governors, traditional rulers, religious leaders, ethnic nationality movements, and civil society organisations.

Former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan will attend the summit and are expected to deliver personal reflections on Nigeria’s constitutional evolution and national cohesion. Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka; elder statesman, General T.Y. Danjuma (rtd); and political icon, Mallam Tanko Yakassai, will also be present.

Other significant participants include leaders of major regional organisations like the Belt Forum, Ohaneze Ndigbo, and the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), who will present positions on restructuring, governance, and political reform.

Themed “Actualizing A Constitutional Democracy That Works for All in Nigeria,” the three-day national conference will x-ray ten critical constitutional issues. These issues will be addressed by a Summit Resolution Team composed of expert resource persons and high-level rapporteurs.

Their work will culminate in a Stakeholders’ Legislative Bill which will be presented to the National Assembly as a framework for comprehensive constitutional reform.

The summit will close on Thursday, July 17, with the formal submission of the Summit Report to President Bola Tinubu by Chief Anyaoku and the coordinating committee, accompanied by the leadership of the National Assembly. This move is expected to signal an official push for federal endorsement and legislative backing.

Organisers say the outcome of the summit could mark a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic journey and provide lasting solutions to the country’s recurrent crises of governance, insecurity, and national unity.

With its diverse and influential participation, the summit is poised to have a far-reaching impact on Nigeria’s future development and constitutional restructuring agenda.
