The Benue State House of Assembly has once again approved a change of name for the state-owned university in Makurdi, settling on the title Father Adasu University, Makurdi.
The resolution was reached during Thursday’s plenary after lawmakers passed an amendment bill replacing the institution’s earlier name, Rev. Fr Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi.
Presenting the report of the House Committee on Education, Majority Leader Saater Tiseer (APC/Mbagwa) explained that the adjustment was necessary to make the university’s name more concise and easier to identify.
The institution was originally established as Benue State University (BSU) in 1992. In December 2024, the Assembly had renamed it after the late Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu, a former governor of Benue State widely celebrated for founding the university.
Thursday’s decision, however, shortens the name while still preserving the legacy of Adasu, who is remembered for his role in expanding access to higher education in the state.
In the same session, the Assembly also passed amendments to laws upgrading the Colleges of Education in Katsina-Ala and Oju into degree-awarding institutions, a move lawmakers said was aimed at strengthening teacher education and boosting academic standards across Benue State.
