The body of Nigeria’s late former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has been placed in an ambulance at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina, marking the beginning of his final journey to Daura, his hometown, where he will be laid to rest later today.
Buhari’s remains arrived earlier from the United Kingdom, where he passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 following a brief illness.
At the airport, a solemn atmosphere prevailed as a high-powered delegation received the body, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Also present were Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda, top members of the Federal Executive Council, military chiefs, and dignitaries from across the country.
Under tight security, the body was transferred into a waiting ambulance as mourners, officials, and military personnel looked on in silence.
The convoy has since departed for Daura, where final burial rites will be conducted in line with Islamic customs.
Buhari, a two-time leader of Nigeria — first as a military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023 — leaves behind a complex legacy and a nation in mourning.
Crowds have already started gathering in Daura to pay their final respects, while tributes continue to pour in from across Nigeria and the global community.
