The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for honouring the legacy of the late President Muhammadu Buhari by renaming the University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University of Maiduguri.

This commendation was conveyed in an official statement released on Friday in Abuja by the Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade.

Dr. Alausa described the renaming as a symbolic and profound gesture that not only immortalises a former leader but also reflects President Tinubu’s unwavering belief in education as the foundation of national progress.

“The Ministry of Education is deeply honoured that the education sector has been chosen as the channel through which the late President’s legacy will be permanently enshrined,” Alausa stated.

He went on to emphasise that President Tinubu’s action showcases deep empathy, enduring respect, and an appreciation of Buhari’s lifelong commitment to national development through education and human capital growth.

“His commitment to human capital development is unwavering and consistent with the path of national renewal that Buhari championed,” he added.

According to Alausa, the decision highlights the current administration’s recognition of education not only as a development tool but also as a pillar of national identity and unity.

The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to upholding the principles of service, integrity, and excellence—values that both Buhari and Tinubu have consistently stood for in their public service careers.

President Tinubu made the formal renaming announcement during a special session of the expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC), which was held in honour of the late President.

The emotionally charged session featured tributes from prominent national figures, including the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio; the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; state governors, federal ministers, and the Head of Service of the Federation.

The renaming of the university is widely seen as part of a broader national effort to preserve the legacy of influential leaders who have shaped Nigeria’s democracy and developmental agenda.
