The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced an investigation into a petition filed against the former Managing Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed, by the Chairman of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote.
Sources familiar with the development confirmed that the anti-graft agency is reviewing the allegations contained in the petition as part of its statutory mandate to investigate claims of financial misconduct and abuse of office. While details of the petition have not been made public, it is understood to relate to actions allegedly taken during Ahmed’s tenure at the petroleum regulatory authority.
The EFCC has not yet disclosed the specific nature of the allegations or whether formal charges may follow. However, officials say the investigation is at a preliminary stage and will involve examination of documents, interviews with relevant parties, and a review of regulatory decisions made under the former NMDPRA leadership.
Neither Farouk Ahmed nor the NMDPRA has issued an official response to the development as of the time of filing this report. Dangote Industries has also declined to comment, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The probe comes amid heightened scrutiny of Nigeria’s oil and gas regulatory framework, particularly as the country pushes for transparency and accountability following reforms in the petroleum sector. Analysts note that the outcome of the investigation could have significant implications for regulatory oversight and investor confidence in the industry.
The EFCC reiterated that the commencement of an investigation does not imply guilt, stressing that all parties are presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
