The Federal Government on Wednesday officially inaugurated the Inter-Ministerial Committee responsible for coordinating activities to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebration.
The inauguration ceremony, held in Abuja, was presided over by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, who emphasized the need for unity, patriotism, and renewed commitment to nation-building as Nigeria approaches the milestone.
“This anniversary is a reminder of where we are coming from and where we are going from here. As a nation, we have faced challenges in areas such as political, economic and social issues, but we have overcome them. An anniversary is not just a celebration of the past, it is a call for action for the future,” Akume said.
Alongside the inauguration, the SGF also unveiled the Nigeria @65 Compendium Project Workstation. The initiative, spearheaded by CherryAfrica Magazine in collaboration with the Office of the SGF, is a state-of-the-art media hub designed to document Nigeria’s development journey. It will feature an interview series with top government officials to highlight their roles in driving the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The SGF himself inaugurated the interview series, urging Nigerians to celebrate the nation’s resilience over the past 65 years while maintaining faith in their leaders. The compendium, according to organizers, will serve as a comprehensive reference material chronicling Nigeria’s milestones from pre-colonial times to the present day, with a particular focus on governance, economic reforms, institutional growth, and democratic consolidation.
Nigeria, which gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, has since commemorated the historic day annually with activities reflecting its political evolution, social struggles, economic reforms, and democratic aspirations. The upcoming 65th anniversary, government officials say, will not only celebrate the past but also chart a collective vision for the future.
