The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a fresh flood prediction alert, warning that several communities across nine states are at risk of flooding between August 23rd and 24th, 2025, due to expected heavy rainfall.
According to a statement from the National Flood Early Warning Center (FEWS CENTER) in Abuja, the states likely to be affected include Benue, Borno, Gombe, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Niger, and Yobe.
In Benue State, areas such as Abinsi, Agyo, Gbajimba, Gogo, Makurdi, Mbapa, Otobi, Otkupo, Udoma, and Ukpiam have been listed as vulnerable. Other locations highlighted include Briyel, Dikwa, and Maiduguri in Borno State; Bajoga, Dogon Ruwa, Gombe, and Nafada in Gombe State; Gwandu, Jega, and Kamba in Kebbi State; Agima, Keana, Keffi, Odogbo, and Rukubi in Nasarawa State; Lapai in Niger State; and Gashua, Gasma, and Potiskum in Yobe State.
The Ministry further cautioned that due to the rising water levels of the River Niger, communities located on flood plains from Jebba to Lokoja are strongly advised to evacuate to safer grounds.
Director of the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, emphasized that stakeholders and state governments must act swiftly to mitigate possible disasters. He also appealed for feedback from relevant authorities to aid in emergency response efforts.
The federal government urged residents in the listed areas to remain vigilant and follow safety directives, warning that the coming days could see severe flooding if preventive measures are not taken.
