A former senator representing Akwa Ibom South, Nelson Effiong, has taken on a new role as the traditional ruler of his community. He was officially installed as the Village Head of Eyo Usotai in Oron Local Government Area and received his certificate of recognition from Governor Umo Eno in Uyo on Tuesday, September 23.
The ceremony was part of activities marking the 38th anniversary of Akwa Ibom State’s creation. It also featured the swearing-in of Saviour Udofia, the Paramount Ruler of Abak LGA, as the new Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers Council.
Governor Eno, while addressing the gathering, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of royal fathers across the state. He noted that official vehicles had been provided to traditional rulers, with older ones replaced, alongside expanded healthcare interventions.
The governor further announced an increase in the monthly allowances of the monarchs, as well as the provision of personal assistants to all paramount rulers.
According to him, traditional institutions remain critical in governance and grassroots development, and his administration is determined to support them. He urged the royal fathers to continue to work closely with his government.
Mr. Effiong, who transitioned from politics to traditional leadership, said his decision to serve as village head was driven by his desire to remain connected to his people and contribute to the peace and development of his community.
