The Benue State Commissioner for Power, Renewable Energy and Transport, Hon. Joe Jir, has condemned in strong terms the recent killing of commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as Okada operators, in Gboko Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Hon. Jir, who also serves as the Point Man of Gboko LGA, expressed deep concern over the growing tension among Okada riders following incidents of theft and the brutal murder of some of their members during night operations in the township.
He described the attacks as “heinous and barbaric,” stressing that no life deserves to be taken in such a cruel manner.
“I wish to strongly condemn these heinous and barbaric acts in their entirety. No life deserves to be cut short in such a cruel manner,” he stated.
The Commissioner urged security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the killings and ensure that those behind the acts are brought to justice.
“I therefore call on the security agencies to immediately investigate the incidents, bring the perpetrators to justice, and ensure the safety of all law-abiding citizens going about their daily activities,” he added.
While commiserating with the families of the victims, Hon. Jir appealed to Okada riders in Gboko to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding, assuring them that government is taking decisive steps to address the situation.
“Government is already engaging the appropriate authorities to address the situation decisively,” he said.
He further called on residents of Gboko and the entire Benue State to continue cooperating with security agencies as efforts are intensified to restore peace and normalcy.
“Let us all continue to cooperate with security operatives as they work to restore peace and normalcy in Gboko and across Benue State,” he concluded.
