The House of Representatives has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Speaker Rt. Hon. Dr. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, dismissing reports suggesting cracks within the 10th Assembly.
Reacting to a publication by Leadership Newspapers of August 30, the House described as misleading claims that lawmakers were heading for a “showdown” over constituency projects, recruitment controversies, and leadership issues.
House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., who signed the official statement on behalf of the Green Chamber, said informal remarks exchanged on internal WhatsApp groups had been misrepresented as official caucus positions.
“Contrary to insinuations of an impending showdown, the House remains united under the leadership of Speaker Abbas. With 360 members drawn from diverse political, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, the House reflects the full heterogeneity of Nigeria and continues to operate on principles of equity, justice, and fairness,” Rotimi stated.
On the issue of constituency projects, Rotimi explained that delayed contractor payments were a national fiscal challenge and not peculiar to lawmakers’ nominations. He noted that the leadership had been engaging the Minister of Finance through the Appropriations Committees, and payments had already commenced with assurances that all outstanding 2024 obligations would soon be cleared.
Regarding recruitment into the National Assembly bureaucracy, Rotimi clarified that the exercise was handled by the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC), an independent statutory body, and not the House leadership. However, he revealed that Speaker Abbas had directed the House Committee on Public Service Matters to probe the process to ensure fairness and compliance with federal character principles.
The spokesman dismissed as false and divisive suggestions that development efforts were being concentrated in one region of the country, insisting that the House remained guided by equity, inclusiveness, and the national interest.
“The House remains focused on national priorities, equitable employment opportunities, and the security of lives and property. Members will resume plenary on September 23, 2025, with renewed commitment to lawmaking, oversight, and representation in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Rotimi added.
Rep. Akin Rotimi stressed that while the Leadership welcomes constructive criticism, speculative reports should not be mistaken for the position of the entire House.
