The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended four of its members for a period of three months following their alleged role in initiating an impeachment move against the Speaker, Chief Aondona Dajoh.
Those affected are Hon. Berger Alfred Emberga (Makurdi North), Hon. Cyril Ekong (Oju 2), Hon. Abu Umoru (Apah), and Hon. Shimawua Terna (Kyan).
In a decisive move to stabilize the Assembly, the House also announced a major reshuffling of its leadership. Hon. Kennedy Angbo was named the new Deputy Majority Leader, while Hon. Douglas Akya was appointed as Deputy Chief Whip. Additionally, Hon. Audu Elias emerged as the new Spokesman of the House.
Meanwhile, the Assembly commenced the screening of five commissioner nominees submitted by Governor Hyacinth Alia. The screening of two other nominees—Hon. Ogwu Odeh and Hon. Imojime Tiza—was deferred to a later date.
The suspension of the lawmakers and the leadership reshuffle are seen as part of the Speaker’s effort to consolidate his grip on the Assembly amid growing internal power tussles.
